در پی فشارهای بین‌المللی و پیگیری رسانه‌های مستقل، جمهوری اسلامی روز شنبه 21 دی ماه، 11 ژانویه، پس از سه روز دروغگویی و لاپوشانی و کتمان، بالاخره تأیید کرد که پدافند سپاه پاسداران هواپیمای مسافربری اوکراینی را بر فراز تهران هدف قرار داده و سرنگون کرده است.
در جریان این حادثه که بامداد چهارشنبه گذشته روی داد، تمامی ۱۷۶ سرنشین هواپیمای اوکراینی که دست‌کم ۱۳۹ نفر از آنها ایرانی بودند، کشته شدند.
در پی اقرار سپاه پاسداران به سرنگون کردن این هواپیما، تجمع‌های اعتراضی مختلفی در تهران و چندین شهر دیگر ایران، از جمله اصفهان، شیراز، همدان، رشت، بابل، ساری، کرمان و ارومیه برگزار شد.
تصاویر منتشر شده در شبکه‌های اجتماعی نشان می‌دهد که برخی از این تجمع‌ها از جمله در کوی دانشگاه تهران تا بامداد دوشنبه نیز ادامه داشته است. در تجمع کوی دانشگاه نیز معترضان علی ای، رهبر جمهوری اسلامی را هدف قرار داده و شعارهایی چون فرمانده کل قوا، استعفا استعفا” و مرگ بر دیکتاتور” سر دادند. خبر تجمع‌های اعتراضی از جمله در دانشگاه‌های تهران، امیرکبیر و صنعتی شریف نیز بازتاب یافت.
پس از این حرکت‌های اعتراضی، دونالد ترامپ، رئیس جمهوری آمریکا در پیام‌هایی توییتری به زبان‌های فارسی و انگلیسی نسبت به قتل عام مجدد معترضان” در ایران هشدار داد.
ترامپ در توییت اول خود به فارسی خطاب به مردم شجاع و رنج کشیده ایران” نوشت: من از ابتدای دوره ریاست جمهوریم با شما ایستاده‌ام و دولت من همچنان با شما خواهد ایستاد. ما اعتراضات شما را از نزدیک دنبال می‌کنیم. شجاعت شما الهام‌بخش است.»
رئیس جمهوری آمریکا سپس در توییت دیگری به فارسی و انگلیسی نوشت: دولت ایران باید به گروه‌های حقوق بشر اجازه بدهد حقیقت کنونی اعتراضات در جریان مردم ایران را نظارت کرده و گزارش بدهند. نباید شاهد کشتار دوباره معترضان مسالمت‌آمیز و یا قطع اینترنت باشیم. جهان نظاره‌گر این اتفاقات است.»

Following international pressure and the pursuit of independent media, the Islamic Republic on Saturday January 11th , after three days of lying and concealment, finally confirmed that it had targeted and shot down a Ukrainian airliner over Tehran.
All 176 passengers of the Ukrainian plane, including at least 139 Iranians, were killed during the incident last Wednesday morning.
Following the Revolutionary Guards' confession of downing of the aircraft, various protest rallies were held in Tehran and several other Iranian cities, including Isfahan, Shiraz, Hamedan, Rasht, Babol, Sari, Kerman and Orumiyeh.
Images released on social media show that some of these rallies continued, including at the Tehran University dorm until Monday morning. At the university rally, protesters targeted Ali Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Republic, chanting "Commander in Chief, Resignation" and "Death to the Dictator".
The news of the protest rallies was also reflected in the universities of Tehran, Amir Kabir and Sharif.
Following the protests, US President Donald Trump warned of "massacre of protesters" in Iran in twitter messages in English and Farsi.
"I have stood with you since the beginning of my presidency, and my government will continue to stand with you," Trump wrote in his first tweet in English to "the brave and suffering Iranian people." We are following your protests closely. Your courage is inspiring. ”
The US president then wrote in another tweet in Persian and English: "The Iranian government should allow human rights groups to monitor and report on the current reality of protests in Iran. We should not see the killing of peaceful protesters again or the Internet shut down. The world is watching this. "
